There are 600 million adolescent girls living in poverty in the developing world. By
giving one of these girls a chance, you start the girl effect. When girls have safe
places to meet, education, legal protection, health care, and access to training and
job skills, they can thrive. And if they thrive, everyone around them thrives, too.
The three major abuses confronting the world's women:
We know there are many worthy causes competing for attention in the world. We
focus on this one because this kind of oppression feels transcendent – and so does
the opportunity. Outsiders can truly make a difference.
So let us be clear up front: We hope to recruit you to join an incipient movement to
emancipate women and fight global poverty by unlocking women's power as
economic catalysts. It is a process that transforms bubbly teenage girls from brothel
slaves into successful businesswomen. You can help accelerate change if you'll just
open your heart and join in.
An adolescent girl stands at the doorway of adulthood. If she stays in school,
remains healthy, and gains skills, she will marry later, have fewer and healthier
children, and earn an income that she’ll invest back into her family.
Her alternative is the path laid down by poverty. She’ll leave school early, marry too
young, and miss the chance to reach her full human potential. Her tragedy,
multiplied by the 600 million adolescent girls throughout the developing world –
contributes to the endless cycle of poverty.
We know that adolescent girls are the key to breaking this cycle. Yet today only a
tiny fraction of international aid is spent on her needs.
