PHILIPS DIGITAL POCKET MEMO 9600 VC
Oh my oh my, this is a nice little piece of work.  Clear as a bell, lots of security,
sturdy, easy to use, with bells and whistles for those who want them that won't get
in the way of those who don't.  Let's see...  where to begin...

First, the audio is outstanding.  Not only do you have the usual choices of long
play and short play, but now you also have a totally new recording format available
(DSS-Pro, instead of just DSS) that allows a third choice:  QP (quality play),
especially geared toward using speech recognition software for transcription.

Second, you can protect your dictation (think HIPAA here) in at three different
levels:  you can password-protect the recorder itself, you can encrypt your
dictation in real-time (that means
as you're doing it, not later on), and you can set
an unlock key that prevents someone from guessing at (and finding) the password
and PIN that cover your other two layers of protection.

Third, you can upload files for transcription without a PC.  It comes with a PC
docking station, but you can also get a LAN docking station that allows network
users to upload from, say, a conference room.  Get those meeting minutes right
out.  And you can easily configure the network options via Web browser.

Fourth, it has rechargeable batteries, and of course you can always recharge
them in the docking station, but now you also have the option of recharging
anytime the recorder is plugged into a USB port.  So if you're traveling, you don't
have to carry the docking station with you.

Fifth, you can put away your reading glasses.  The 9600 has the largest LCD
display in the biz, and everything you need to know is on it.  More importantly, stuff
you
don't need to know isn't, so it's easy to read.

Sixth, it's all metal.  If you drop it, it will still work.

Seventh, it has "smart buttons."  You know those two buttons on your cell phone
whose functionality changes depending on where you are?  Like that.  And they
work great.  You're only offered options that are actually available in the mode
you're currently in, so it's almost impossible to get lost in the display.

Eighth, you can use voice commands, as you could with earlier DPMs.  And you
can make them mandatory, so that a doctor HAS to put in the medical record
number before s/he can start dictating.  Or..

Ninth,  you can attach a bar-code scanner for medical record and legal case
numbers.   (Wonder what  would happen if you scanned in a bag of chips...)

Tenth, longer battery life.  With the included 128 MB SD/MMC card, in SP mode
you get about 20 hours of dictation, 32 in LP mode, and about 10 in QP mode.
That's because the sampling rate (which is what determines accuracy from a
speech-recognition-software point of view) is twice as high in QP mode, and
something's gotta give to get that.

Here are some other benefits you  might be interested in:

  • You can set work type codes or patient/client ID numbers spoken by the
    author, which the 9600 transforms into file headers.  E.g. "H & P," "654321."

  • The position currently occupied by the 4-position switch is shown on the
LCD display.  In addition, a little wheel spins around while you're recording
and the volume meter goes up and down, so you can definitely tell when
you're recording.  No more talking for an hour and then finding out you
    never turned the thing on.

  • You can jack up the size of the SD/MMC card to 2G if you want, for extended
"on the go" recording (like, if you're fleeing an FBI investigation and are not
sure when it'll be safe to return).

  • Voice-activated recording possible.  You can set the level yourself.  Good
for if you spend a lot of time Thinking Deep Thoughts between utterances.

  • A very nice function button that you can set to do various idiosyncratic
things.  By default it's set for insert/overwrite, but you needn't leave it that
    way.

  • You can switch the FF button and the EOL (end of letter) button if you're
    built backwards.

  • You can set the included software to automatically download firmware and
software updates as they become available.  (Nothing stays the same
    forever.)

  • Priority index marks a dictation file as urgent.  There are also "pay no
attention to this, I was just fooling around" marks available.

  • The power supply comes with multiple heads so that you can use it in the
US, the UK, the EU, and Australia.  Now, that is a nice touch that you
    road/ocean warriors will appreciate.
